South Bank Studios artists run, host and collaborate on a number of community art projects and events. You’ll find more information about community project below. If you have an idea or want to get involved then please get in touch.
Southlands Community Garden
All are welcome to enjoy the garden
The lovely Southlands Community Garden surrounds our building on Bishopthorpe Road, York. It is run by volunteers from the church, South Bank Studios, Planet Food and the local community.

Community Events
Each year we open our doors as part of York Open Studios and hold a Winter Fair, both very popular events.
We have also taken part in Heritage Open Days (September 2022 - follow this link. for more information) and York Residents First weekend (January 2022)
All of these events were a great success and we hope to do more in the future.

Community Art Projects

Below you will find an example of a community art project which was set up by two of our resident artists, Donna Maria Taylor and Katie Hill, during the winter lockdown of 2021:
My Bubble: A Year of Change

The ‘bubbles’ have since been exhibited at a number of locations around York (including York EXPLORE library, City Screen, York District Hospital, and the Foyer Gallery and Room at Southlands Methodist Church).
“My Bubble” - A YEAR OF CHANGE
A community art project originally set up in 2021 by:
BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT:
From 31st January through to 23rd March 2021 South Bank Studios invited artists and residents of York to submit artwork on the theme of: My Bubble - A YEAR OF CHANGE.
The project was open to all ages, and artworks had to be presented in a circle between 12cm and 21cm in diameter. Submitted pieces were to be personal to the individual and inspired by life in York during Covid-19 times.
