John is a mixed media artist. His current practice is experimental, looking to explore interesting interactions between traditional drawing media (mostly charcoal, pastel, graphite, ink) to create works of contemporary/abstract art. His acrylic paintings develop from pursuing similar sensitivities, based loosely on sketches of landscape or figures in the landscape. He also uses images captured by photography or from the internet.
John, a retired academic bioscientist has a lifelong passion for art. Until retirement, 2011, he had no time to do art, but it is now a major preoccupation. Lacking art education, he has discovered a deep interest in art history and developed art skills/practice through local art classes run by inspirational tutors (Tim Morrison, Karen Winship, Phil Reynolds), attended live workshops and studied on-line courses. He has exhibited regularly in York in recent years, including York Open Studios 2024.
