Ala Jazayeri is an Iranian artist based in York, UK. Her recent work explores the relationship between place, memory, and dislocation in connection to the psychic, emotional and affective investments they provoke and engender within us. She is currently returning to various sites which were formative in her childhood and adolescence growing up in southwestern Iran during the eight-year Iran-Iraq War, but which have since been irrevocably lost or transformed for better and for worse.
Her work tries to capture how we remember and recollect our sense of belonging, and feelings of attachment which can never be fully recovered. Her work also tries to capture the profound and mournful sense of loss for a place that is both familiar, and yet has ceased to be wholly recognisable.
Ala Jazayeri received a BA degree in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Arts (UAL) in 2015 and a Postgraduate diploma in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London.
